SPECIAL SINHALESE RADIO
PROGRAM

A special Sinhalese program will be broadcast from the Colombo Station tomorrow to celebrate the number of Sinhalese Radio Licensees reaching the total of 10000. The program includes messages, talks, musical items. poems and songs by prominent officials and members of the public and popular radio artistes.

The details of the program, which will last from 7.30-8.45 p.m. are as follows:

අපේ සංගීතයේ මුල් අඩිය.
සංගීත් විශාරද සුනිල් ශාන්ති විසිනි.

එදා පටන් අද වන තෙක් පරයින් ගේ උණුහුම පතා සිටින හෙළයා තුළ කවර දා නම් තම උණුහුමෙක් උපදීද? කෙනෙකු උපදිනවා. ලැබුණු දෙයක් කනවා. ලගිනවා මිය යනවා. තව තෙනෙකු උපදිනවා. කවුරුන් මරා හෝ තමන් හැදෙනවා, රට කොටවනවා, මරාගෙන මැරෙනවා. දස දිගින් ඇසෙන්නේ නම් රට රකිවු. දැය රකි වූ, බස රකිව් යන හඬය. එහෙත් ඒ එකකුදු රැකුණු බව තබා රැකෙන ලකුණකුදු පෙනෙන තෙක් මානයේ නැති.

ජාතියෙක දියුණුවේ තරම මනින එක් මිම්මක් නම් ඒ රටේ සංගීතයයි. දැන් මැන බලමු ටිකක්, අපේ තරම ඒ මිම්මෙන්..........මිම්මට ඉවසිලි නැති. ඒ පුපුරන්නට බලයි. උතුරා යයි..........ගුවන් විදුලි සංගීතය, ශබ්ද වාහිනි සංගීතය, සිනිමා සංගීතය, පාඨශාලා සංගීතය, විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයයේ සංගීතය, දේව මන්දිරයේ සංගීතය, තේ පැන් සැලෙහි ද සංගීතය, බස් නැවතුම් පොළෙහි ද සංගීතය, මඟ දෙපසත් සංගීතය, දියෙත් ගොඩත් අහසෙත් සංගීතය, දස දෙස ම සංගීතය ! සංගීතය ! සංගීතය ! මේ සියල්ල එක මිම්මෙකින් කෙසේ මනිමුද - ? මව ගේ නැළැවිලි ගීයට බිළිඳා කන් යොමා සිටියි. නයි පනික්කියාගේ නළාවෙන් පිටවන මිහිරි හඬට දරුණු නයා ද වසඟවෙයි. ගවයා ගේ ගෙලෙහි බැඳෙන ගිගිරි වැලේ හඬ නිසා හේ අමුතු පණක් ලබයි. අශ්වයා ද ළය නො වරදවා කුර හඬ නඟන්නේ මහත් ආඩම්බරයෙකිනි. ලේනාගේ මිහිරි ගීයට තාලය දෙන්නේ උගේ වලගයි. කොවුලා උදේ සවස ශබ්ද නගා ගයන්නේ ස්වර සප්තකයය. සොබා දහම මෙ ලෙසින් ලොව පුරා සංගීතය පතුරුවන අතර සිහි මොලය ඇති සතකු වූ හෙළයා ඉන් කෙසේ වැලැ කෙයිද? එ බැවිනි, හෙළයා අවට ද එ තරම් සංගීතය පවතින්නේ. ඒ සංගීතය හුදෙක් සොබා දහම නිසා ම ඇති වූවෙකි. ඔහු ගේ ශක්තියෙන් නිපදවාගත් දෙයෙක් නො වේ. ඉතින් කෙසේද සංගීතය මිම්මක් කොට හෙළයාගේ දියුණුව මනින්නේ?

අපට සංගීතයක් නො තිබුණා නො වේ. පරයනට ගුරුකම් දෙන්නට තරම් උසස් තත්වයෙක අපේ සංගීතය පැවැතිණි. අපේ මහරජ වූ රාවණයන් සංගීතයෙහි අති සමතකු බවත් රාවණා වීණා නමින් වූ වීණාවක් ඔවුන්
විසින්ම නිපදවන ලද බවත් කියති. විජයයන් ලකට බඩ ගෑ කාලයේ සිරිවත් පුරයේ උත්සවයන් පැවැතුනේ පරයින්ගෙන් උගත් සංගීතයෙන්ද? නැත. අපේ හෙළ මවගේ සිරිය දැක පරයින් මෙහි ඇදෙන්නට පටන් ගත් පසු පර ගැති බවට උපන් හෙළයා තමන්ගේ දේ අකුලේ ගසා අනුන්ගේ දේ හිස මුදුනෙන් පිළිගෙන අද වන තුරු පර ගැතියකු වැ සිටියි. අයෙක් යුරෝපීය සංගීතය තමන්ගේ සංගීතය හැටියට සලකති. අයෙක් ඉන්දියානු සංගීතය තමන්ගේ හැටියට හිස මුදුනෙන් පිළිගෙන වැඳුම් පිඳුම් දෙති. තමන් ගේ බස වළං දොරට දක්කා දමා අනුන් ගේ බසක් මව් බස කරගන්නට තරම් එඩිතර වූ සී-හෙළයා අතින් මෙ බඳු දේ සිදු වීම පුදුමයෙක් ද?

අපි ඉංගිරිසි පමණක් නොව ප්‍රංස, ජර්මන්, උර්දු, හින්දි, ග්‍රීක්, ලතින් ආදී හැම බසක්ම උගනිමු. එහෙත් ඒ එකකු දූ අපේ බස නොවේ. එමෙන්ම අපි යුරෝපීය සංගීතය උගනිමු. හින්දුස්තානි සංගීතය ද උගනිමු. හැකි නම් අන් හැම සංගීතයක්ම උගනිමු එහෙත් ඒ එකකු දූ අපේ නොවේ. අපේ නොවන දෙයකට අපි කුමට මුල් තැන දෙමුද? කුමට හිස මුදුනෙන් පිළිගනිමු ද? කුමට ගැති වමුද? ගනිමු අපේ දේ ඉදිරියට. අපේ දෙයක් නැත් නම් නිපදවමු එකක්.

අන් සෑම ජාතියකටම ඔවුන්ගේ ය යි කියා ආඩම්බර විය හැකි සංගීත ක්‍රමයෙක් තිබේ. යුරෝපීය සංගීතයෙත්, ඉන්දියානු සංගීතයෙන් වෙනස එක වරම අපට දැනේ. උතුරු ඉන්දියානු සංගීතයෙත්, දකුණු ඉන්දියානු සංගීතයෙන් වෙනස ද අපාසුවක් නැතිව දැනගත හැකි. බෙංගාලයේ සංගීතය කවර ක්‍රමයෙක එකක් දැයි වංග ගී අසා ඇත්තෝ දනිති. නැගෙනහිර බෙංගාලයේ තවත් විශෙෂ වූවෙකි. මුස්ලිම් ජාතිකයන් අතර මීට හාත්පසින්ම වෙනස් සංගීතයෙක් පවතී. හවායි දූවේ සංගීතය ඉහත කී සෑම එකකටම වඩා වෙනස් වූවෙකි. ජපනුන් ගේ අනෙකෙකි. අරාබීන්ගේ තවත් ක්‍රමයෙකි. මේ ලෙසින් සෑම ජාතියෙකම සංගීතය ඇසු පමණින් අපට හඳුනාගත හැකි. එහෙත් අපේ - ? අපි අනුන්ගේ දේ බලා ඇස් උඩ ඉඳුවා තොල කට ලෙව කා, ආ වඩා, පසඟ පිහිටුවා වැඳ ඊට ගැති වමු. නිහීන කමෙක මහත!

සෑම දේකටම පටන් ගැන්මෙක් තිබේ. සෑම ජාතියකටම අයත් සංගීතයන් ක්‍රමයෙන් හැඩ ගැසී තිබේ. එකවර කිසිවක් ඇති නො වේ. නවීන කාලයට ගැලපෙන සංගීතයක් අපට නැති. එය හැඩ ගසා ගත යුතු වැ තිබේ. අන් සෑම ජාතීන්න්ම රස කරමින් ගයන්නේ ඔවුන් ගේ ගීය. අපට ද එ බඳු ගී අපමණ තිබේ. ඒවා පොතට පමණක් සීමා වැ පවතී. ගනිමු ඒවා එළියට. ගයමු මිහිරට. මෙයයි අපේ සංගීතයේ මුල් අඩිය.

"A HARROVIAN NIGHT"

The Harrows Sports Club gave an interesting pot-pourri of dances, songs and orchestral music last Saturday night to a crowded audience, which in- cluded the Mayor of Colombo.

Miss Corrinne Packeer's pupils were seen in a pleasing Minuet (heightened by colourful costuming) which drew a resounding ovation from the house. Ronnie Bartholomeusz and his South Sea Island Serenaders wound up the show with a bang-Therese Pietersz leading the hula-hula dancers, in typical Hawaiian fashion.

Among the other items of note were Sunil Shanti's songs (repeatedly encored) and Pitman Abraham's Sinatra- like crooning. Grace Borroughs gave two dance items. Sheridan Dias' snake dance was impressive.

Altogether it was first-class entertainment, and the young Harrovians deserved the encomiums showered on them after the show.

SONG AND DANCE IN AID
OF GIRLS' COLLEGE

The Song and Dance recital in aid of the Buddhist Girls' College, Mount Lavinia, held on Saturday night at St. Peter's College hall, Wellawatte, was largely attended. An almost fully crowded house was provided with a pleasing blend of Eastern song and dance and Western musical items.

The programme of 18 items. opened with a fascinating dance interpretation by Sujata de Silva one of the star performers of Shanti Kala Niketam. The Oriental section of the program was greatly enhanced by Sunil Shanti's singing. Sunil Shanti will hold any audience with his melodious voice, engaging personality and the poetic imagery of his songs. Sukhendu Dutt in an inspiring rendering of the Manipuri maintained his reputation as one-time dance partner of Srimati Mira Devi and Sadhona Bose. Premila of Chitra Sena's troupe in the Manipuri Dance, Lionel Edirisinghe at the Sitar, Prabhakar Nahas Deo of Sholapur Swarna and Dunstan de Silva, and Lakshman de Alwis were among the other prominent players.

Of the Western musical items, the able rendering of "Island Spell" (John. Ire-land) and 'Romance' (Sibelins) by Chitra Malalasekera at the piano; Doris de Zilva in a Cello solo (Kol Nidrei-Max Bruch) accompanied by Eardley de Zilva who also played Theme by Haydn in F., and Hector Edirisinghe in his popular Alpine interludes provided an interesting pot-pourri of good fare,

Star Parade

A GALAXY of artistes, some wellknown in the Island among them, appeared on the Colombo Town Hall stage last night in a Potpourri of song and dance in aid of the newly-formed Bambalapitiya Y.M.B.A.

Hubert Rajapakse and Sunil Shanti with their vocal items, and Chinta Perera (of the Chitra Sena Troupe) and little Indira Menon with their dances. were the mainstay of the Eastern section of programme in which all others too contributed to the success of the evening. The programme opened with a pleasing "Saraswathie Puja" dance, by the students of Buddhist Girls' School, Campbell Place.

Luis Moreno, ever obliging to organisers of charity shows, ushered in the Western items with two 'cello solos which won much applause. He was followed by Soma Seneviratne (in songs) and six pupils of the Sample School of Dance who thrilled the audience with their gracefully skilful movements.

Clarence de Alwis provided the one and only "he-man" item by controlling his muscles-to the rhythm of piano music-just as he liked while G. C. P. Amarasekera and his daughter Augusta, amply proved that song and dance alone must not fill a variety programme.

The organisers had shown good judgment in the arrangement of the entertainment, though it was quite long-drawn-out. The others who provided items were Chitra, P. L. A. Somapala. Leonard Dias Bandaranaike, Swarna Samarasinghe and the Rotary Community Centre.

Oriental Song And
Dance Recital

AN Oriental Song and Dance Recital organised by Mr. Daya Hewavitarne was put up at the Town Hall in aid of the Mallika Home for the Aged and the Y.M.B.A., on Saturday evening.

The most outstanding items were those contributed by members of Chitra Sena's Troupe. Ganga Nath and Rupa Lekha formed an equisite pair as they danced the Lasya Nritya. an exposition of the elementary combinations of South Indian dancing. Rupa Lekha is still a little stiff compared to Premila whose fluid grace in dancing the Manipuri dance has much improved since her last appearance at the Town Hall about a month ago.

Outbursts of applause greeted Sunil Shanti's singing whose items were fully appreciated by all. Many even joined him off-stage!. The Western flourishes affected by his accompanists (and some times by him), however, tended to detract from the enjoyment as well as the value of his singing.

Sarat Sena's expert drumming are companied the two dances as well as the vocal items and helped to lift them above the average.

The Kandyan drummers and dancers. dressed for the stage and set in a flood of red light against a fake gate-way displayed their talents and the barbaric beauty of the Kandyan dances with an authentic air, their lean bodies jerking and swaying to the loud beats of the drums.

"Seela" gave her song a great deal of feeling and sentiment with unconscious ease and was also greatly appreciated. The stages lighting and decor were disappointing and monotonous.

On the whole the audience went home well pleased with the evening's entertainment.

Presenting The Stars...

TAST night was presentation night for the Oriental "star" artistes got together by Mr. Daya Hewavitarne at the Town Hall, Colombo. Nearly every aspect of Oriental dance, music and song, except Sinhalese folk-songs was represented. (What has happened to our carters and harvesters' songs by the way?-they were such a craze- some years ago).

Those who missed Premila in her Manipuri item some weeks ago had another opportunity of seeing this talented dancer in an exquisite performance. Last night she showed much maturity and was pleasingly effortless in her lasya movements. There was nothing outstanding about Vivienne Seneviratne's Dance of Kuveni. Ganga Nath and Rupa Lekha of the Chitrasena School combined well again-graceful and attractive-in the Lasya Nritya which roused much appreciative comment last time.

Sunil Shanti was much called for and responded with two popular songs, rendered in a cleverly modulated voice. He was obliged to bow to the call of the audience a third time at the end of the show. "Seela" put in the required pathos and feeling in her Sinhalese song which was also well received. The Bharata Music Society Orchestra, and the Y.M.B.A. Orchestra (led by Lionel Edirisinghe) embellished the programme.

The whole show was, I think, a triumph for Mr. S. P. Sakalasuriya, the stage decor, whose novel and pleasing settings heightened the performances. The Maligawa Courtyard setting for the Kandyan Ves and Pantheru dances (both well done by unnamed per- formers) was his piece de resistance, helping to capture the spirit of the Hill Capital. One question lurked in me: Have we found in Sakalasuriya another J. D. A. Perera?
