හෙළ හවුල්-සුබැසි මහ සමුළුව

ගිය දෙසැම්බර් 29 වනදා කොළොඹැ පුර හලේ දී පැවැත්වුණු හෙළ හවුල්-සුබැසි මහ සමුළුව හෙළ හවුලේ පළමු මුළු පිළිබඳ සියලු තොරතුරු අබිබවා නැඟැ සිටින අලුත් තොරතුරක් එහි අගනා යට ගිය පුවතට එකතු කෙළේ යි. හෙළ බසට සැබැ ආදරය දක්වන්නවුන් මෙ සා මහත් රැසක් එක් වී පැවැත්වුණු මෙ බඳු මහ සමුළුවක් දිවයිනේ කිසි මැ විදුහුරු වියපුරුවක් මඟින් පසු ගිය අවුරුද්දේ දී නො වූ බව සලකන විටැ මේ සමුළුව හෙළ බසට ළෙන් ගතුකම් පානවුනට මහත් පුබුදක් දනවන්නට කරුණු වන බව නිසැක යි.

සමුළුවට එක් වූ පිරිස දහසද ඉක්මවා නැඟී ගියෙන් බොහෝ දෙනකුට අසුන් පහසුවෙන් තොර වැ එළියේ සිටින්නට පවා සිදු වියැ. මේ පිරිස අතරෙහි බොහෝ දෙන මාතර, තංගල්ල, මහ නුවර, කොත්මලේ, බණ්ඩාරවෙල අනුරපුර, රක්වාන, පොළොන්නරුව වැනි ඉතා ඈත පියෙස්හි සිටැ කලින් අවුත් අගනුවර රැඳී-ගෙනැ මුළුවට හවුල් වූ හෙළ බසට පුදුම ලැදි කමක් දක්වන සැබැ හෙළයෝ යි.

පෙරවරු 9 පටන් පස් වරුයේ 8 වන තෙක් පැවැත්වුණු සමුළුව දෙ වරුවකට බෙදිණ. පෙරවරු සමුළුවේ කටයුතු අමරසිරි ගුණවඩු සවිමනුන් ගේ මුළු නයු බැවින් පැවැත්විණ. හෙළ හවුලේ සකසුරු තැන්පත් වෙ.ම. පෙරේරයෝ ගිය අවුරුද්දේ තොරතුරු ඉදිරිපත් කළ හ. හෙළ හවුල ඇරැඹි සැටිත් එය මෙතෙක් පැවැති සැටින් එහි ඉදිරි කටයුතුත් ඔහු ඉන් ඉඳුරාමැ හෙළිකැරැ දැක්වූහ. පෙර වරුවේ පැවැති ඉතා වැද-ගත් කටයුත්ත වූ නයු මඬුල්ලේ දෙස්ම පැක්මේ මීළඟ තැන ගති. හෙළ හවුල් නයු ජයන්ත වීරසේකරයෝ ලෙඩින් පෙළෙමින් ඉතා දුබල වැ සිටි ඒ මොහොතේ පවා මහ කර බර කරුණු අලළා අනැඟි දෙසුමක් කළ හ. ‘සුබැසියෝ’ නමිහුදක් සුබස සඟරාව කියවන්නාහු මැ මතු නොවෙති. හෙළ බස නො වරදවා වහරවන්නට දන්නා හැම මැ සුබැසියෝ යි. හෙළ හවුල නම් එක් ගුරු පරපුරෙකැ ටික දෙනකුන් ගේ වියුවුරුවෙක් නොවේ. හෙළ බස වහරවන හැම මැ සතු එකෙකි. අපි දැන් එක් බස් ආරක් පිළිගෙනැ ඒ අනුවැ පැබැඳුම් හැඩ ගස්සන්නට යතම්හ අප මේ තෙක් කළ හරිය පල දී ඇති තරම
ඉතා තොස් කර වෙයි; මෙ මගින් මුත් හෙළ බස නගා සිටුවන්නට පිළිවන් අන් සැටියක් නැති බව යි දැන් අපේ අදහස මේ මඟෙහි යා හැකියවුන් ඉතා වැඩි දෙනකුන් නොවනු වියැ හැකි යි. එහෙත් මේ බසෙහි සමත් කම් දක්වන්නවුන් ගේ තරම දන්නා අපට මෙහි ඉදිරි යයුව පිළිබඳ මඳ වූ ද සැකයෙක් නැති. මේ මඟ සෙස්සනුදු පිය
කරන බවට දැන් දැන් දස අතින් දෙස් පෙනෙයි. වරදවමින් හෝ වල් වැදෙමින් හෝ වළේ වැටෙමින් හෝ මේ මගේ ඊමට තැත් කරන්නවුන් දෙසැ අප හැම විටැ මැ බලා සිටින්නේ බලවත් දිරිකර තල්ලුවක් දෙන අටියෙන් මැ යි. මේ රටේ-මේ කුඩා දිවයිනේ -මේ යටතුන් ගේ දනවුවේ බස නො රැකී දෙස රැකෙතියි යන බොළඳ සිති විල්ල අපට නැති.

පිළිවෙළක් ඇතිවැ සුබස පැවැත්වීමට අපට මේ අවුරුද්දේ පිළිවන් වූයේ යි. සුබැසියන් ගේ බලවත් මැ යුතුකම නම් හැකි සියලු සැටියෙන් සුබැසියන් ගණන වැඩිම යි.

යනු වීරසේකරයන් ගේ දෙසුමේ හරවුව යි.

ඉක්බිති වැ වරකාගොඩ සිල්රුවන් පඬි හිමියන් හෙළයේ එළිය යන මැයෙන් කළ දෙසුම ඔවුන් හෙළ බසත් හෙළ බස වැඩු කුමාරතුංග මුනිදාසයනුත් කෙරේ දක්වන ඉහළ බැති බව හැඟැවී යැ.

සැලැකැවීම් සැසැඳිලි විටේ දී අබිරම් ගම්හේවායන් විසින් යට සඳහන් සැලැකැවීම ඉදිරිපත් කරන ලදි.

"සරසවියේ සිය බස ඉගැන්වීමේ කට-යුතු සිය, බසින් මැ කිරීම සඳහා ඇවැසි දෑ සැපැයීම හැකි තාක් ඉක්මනින් කළ මනා බව සුබැසියන් ගේ මේ මහ සමුළුව සරසවියේ ඒ පිළිබඳ බලය
ඇත්තවුනට බල කැරැ දක්වයි" බියන්විල දම්දස් රාලහාමින් විසින් තීර කරනු ලැබීමෙන් ඒ පිළිගැනිණ.

ඉන් පසු මුළු නයුවන් ගේ දෙසුමෙන් පෙරවරුවේ කට-යුතු හමාර වූයේ යි.

අතුරු විටින් පසු පස්වරු 2 ට යළිත් ඇරැඹුණු සමුළුව අබිරම් ගම්හේවායන් ගේ මුළු නසු බැවින් පවත්වන ලදී. මුලින් මැ යෙදුණු කට-යුත්ත වූයේ ගරු මෝසෙස් පෙරේරා පිය තුමන් ගේ දෙසුම යි. එ තුමෝ පුරුදු පරිදි මැ අසන්නන් රස දනවමින් හෙළ පැදියේ රස පෙරා ගන්නා අයුරු පහදමින් අගනා දෙසුමක් බෑ හ. කෝදාගොඩ නැණලු පඬි හිමි පාණන් ගේ විදුහුරු දෙස්ම ආයේ ඊ ළඟට යි.

‘අමරකොෂ සිංහල සන්නය’ යන මැයෙන් කළ ඒ දේස්ම ඒ පඬි හිමි පාණන් හෙළ බසත් සකු බසත් පිළිබඳ වැ තොරක් නැති වැ කරන සියුම් සෙවීම් නිසා ලබන මහ පල සුබැසියනට බෙදා දීමක් බඳු වියැ. පඬි හිමි පාණන් අතින් සැකැසි පහැරු වර පතා සිටින අමරකෝස සන්නයේ පැරැණි තතු පුරා හෙළි කිරීම් සමඟමැ මෙ තෙක් අඳුරේ පැවැති ගැට තැන් කීපයක් එළියට ඇද ලිහා දැක්වීම ද මැනැවින් කරන ලදී.

හෙළ බසට ලැදි කම් දක්වන්නා වූ ද නිවැරදි හෙළ බස වහරන්නට දන්නා වූ කිතුනු පියවරුන් ඉතා ටික දෙන අතරෙන් ඉතා පළමුවූ ද
බස් රස හඳුනන්නා වූ පිය කෙනකුන් වූ ගරු මරසලීනු ජයකොඩි පිය තුමන් ගේ රස බර දෙසුම ඊළඟට ආයේ යි. ලිහිල් බසින් කරුණු පැහැදිලි කිරීමට දන්නා ඒ පිය තුමන් සුබස් රස යන මැයෙන් කළ දෙසුම එ තුමන් ලතින්, ග්‍රීක, ප්‍රංශ, ඉංගිරිසි ඈ පැළදිග ලිවි සැරියෙහි එන රස ඇඳූ පූ සැටිත් සෙස්සනට
ඒ තැන් නඟා පාදා දැක්වීමේ සපන් සැටිත් ඉඳුරා පළ කෙළේ යි. ඊලියාදයේ (Iliad) පටන් ඊසොප් කතන්දර තෙක් පැළ දිග ලිවි සැරි අලළමින් කළ ඒ දෙසුම එක මැ රස බෙදා දීමෙක් වූයේ යි.

අතුරු විට පැමිණියේ යි. රැ. තෙන්නකෝන් කිවිසුරාණන් ගේ දෙසුම ඉක්බිති වැ ආ යැ. සස්න-කවුඩු පැනිස් රජ පවුල යන මැයෙන් වූ ඒ දෙසුම පොත් සිඟිත්තක් සේ පසාරවා තිබුණෙන් දෙසුමට පළමු සුබැසියන් අතරේ බෙදා හරින ලදී. තෙන්නකෝන් කිවිසුරාණන් හෙළ රටේ යට ගිය තොරතුරු පිළිබඳ කරුණු සොයා රැස් කර ඇති තැනින් එක් දෙකරුණක් ඇදැ පාදා දිමක් සේ ගතයුතු වූ මේ දෙසුමෙන් පත පොතට පෙර--බුදු දහම මුල් බැසැ ගන්නට පෙර--මේ රටේ පැරණි තතු පිළිබඳ මෙ තෙක් කිසිවකුට කිසි විටෙකැ කිසි සැටියෙකින් සොයා ගත නො හැකි වූ අගනා සැබෑ තොරතුරු රැසෙක් එළි කරන ලදී. මේ දෙසුමෙහි එන කරුණු පිළිබඳ විවිසීම් විසින් හෝ නිනවූ විසින් හෝ යමක් දැක්වීමට තරම් යට ගිය තොරතුරු පිළිබඳ වෙසෙසියාව ඇත්තන් වැඩිදෙනකු මේ දිවයිනේ වෙතියි නො පෙනෙන හෙයින් දෙසුම් ගැනැ කිමට මේ නො තැන බව කීම පමණක් මෙහි දී පරිස්සම් සහිත කියමන වෙයි.

පස් වරුවේ පැක්ම ඉතා දිග එකක් වුව ද ඒ බව පිරිසට නො දැනිණ. සගයු වෙසරද සුනිල් සාන්තයන් ගේ පිරිස විසින් විටින් විටැ පැරැණි නව හෙළ ගී ගයා වයා දැක්වීමෙන් පැවැත්වූ විනොයුව සියුම් විදු රසයට සියුම් කලා රස එක් කිරීමෙක් වියැ. සුනිල් සාන්තයන් හෙළ සගයුවේ ලා දක්වන ඉහළ හැකියාවත්, හෙළ සගයුව මේ කලට ඔබින සැටියෙන් සකසා නව සගයු කලාවක් පිළිහඹන්නට ඔවුන් කෙරෙහි ඇති කලා කුසලතාවත් දැන් මැනැවින් පළ වී ඇති හෙයින් ඔවුන් හෙළ සගයුව වඩන්නට ගත්තා තැතට හැම ම හෙළයන් වහල දීම බලවත් යුතු කමක් බව මෙහිදී ද පෙනී ගියේ යි.

පැක්ම අවසනට පැවැති විසිතුරු විනායුවට උඩරට පැරණි කලා කුලුයකට අයත් කිරි ගණින තැනගේ පිරිස හවුල් වූ හ

කටයුතු කෙළවර මුළුනයුවෝ හෙළ හවුලේ ඉදිරි කටයුතු සඳහා හැම මෑ සුබැසියන් ගෙන් වහල පතන බව පළ කළා හ. පෙදෙසි හෙළ හවුල් වැඩීමත් සුබස සඟරාව පැතිරවීමත් ඒ මඟින් හෙළ බස වගාවත් ඒ සඳහා හෙළ හවුලේ කටයුතු පිළිවෙළ අනු වැ යා යුතු සැටියත් ඔහු තරයේ කියා පෑ හ. හෙළ හවුලේ මහ බරක් ඔසොවා සිටින වෙ.ම.පෙරේරයනට ද නයු මඬුල්ලට ද, මැදි මඬුල්ලට ද, නියෙදි මඬුල්ලට ද පැසැස්මක් පිරිනැමූ හ.

විසිතුරු විනොයුව කෙළවර දැගීය ගයා සුබැසියෝ විසිර ගිය හ.

සුනීල්-හඬ

සුනීල් සාන්ත සහ හියුබත් දිසානායක.

ගායකයකු වශයෙන් සුනීල් සාන්ත වර්තමානයට හඳුන්වාදීමට විශේෂ පරිශ්‍රමයක් නුවුවමනායැයි සිතමි. කථාකිරීමේ ආශීර්වාදය හැමටම වාගේ ලැබෙන නමුත් ගී ගැයීමේ බුහුටි බව ලැබෙන්නේ ඉතා ටික දෙනකුටය. සුනීල් සාන්ත ඒ ඉතා ටික දෙනගෙන් එක්කෙනෙකි. ගායකයා ගයන්නේ හුදෙක් තමාගේම අන්තරය සැනසීමට හෝ පළකිරීමට හෝ පමණක් නොවේ. අනුන්ගේ වේදනාව සහනය කිරීමටත් දුක් පහකිරීමට නොහොත් අමතක කරවීමටත් සිතේ බැඳී පවතිනා හැඟීම් ඉවත් කිරීමටත් ගායකයා ගී ගයන්නේය. මෙයට කලින් පළවූ රිදී වලාවේ ගී වලින් මෙන්ම සුනිල් හඬේ ගී වලින්ද සුනීල් සාන්තගේ සුමුධුර ගායනයෙන්ද සිදුවන්නේත් එබන්දෙකි.

සිංහල ගී සින්දු ආදිය කෙරෙහි දැක්විය යුතු ගරුත්වයෙනුත් ඇදහිය යුතු පිළිගැනීමෙනුත් ගරුකරන්නටත් පිළිගැනීමක් දක්වන්නටත් සිංහල මිනිසුන් පටන් ගත්තේ ඉතා මෑත කාලයක සිටය. සංගීතය පිළිබඳ ලංකාවේ මේ නූතන උන්නතිය ආරම්භ වූයේ එක්තරා ගීත කීපයකිනි. ගායකයන් කීපදෙනෙකුගෙනි. ඒ චමත්කාර ජනක මිහිරි ආරම්භය උදාකර දීමෙහි මූලික වූවකු වශයෙන් සුනිල් සාන්තද සලකනු ලැබිය හැකිය. සුනීල් හඬේ ගී දසඅත සුනීල් සාන්තගේ ගායන මාධුර්යයට රස මාවතකි.

ලේඛකයකු සහ කිවියකු වීම මෙන්ම ගායකයකු වීමද සහජයෙන් ම ලැබිය යුතු වාසනා මහිමයක් සේ මම සළකමි. හුදෙක් අභ්‍යාසයෙන් පමණක් එබන්දකු විය නොහැකිය. සහජ වාසනා මහිමයට ශාස්ත්‍රානුකූල අභ්‍යාසයන් එක්කරගත් මේ ගායකයාගේ එක් උත්සාහයක්ව පවත්නේ අමිශ්‍ර සිංහලයෙන් නව නාට්‍ය රසය උද්ගිරෙන ඕනෑම අදහසක් පළකළ හැකි බව විදහා දැක්වීමය. ඒ පරිශ්‍රමය සාර්ථක වී ඇති බව මෙයින්ද පෙනේ.

අපේ ඉතා රසවත් ගී අත් කිසිවක් නොව අපේ ඉතා දුක්ඛිත සිතිවිලි යැයි අපරදිග ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ කවියකුගේ කියමනකි. ඒ බව මේ ගී වලින්ද ස්ඵුට කෙරෙයි. ගීතයත් කවියකි. මේ ගී ඉතා උසස් කාව්‍යයන් වශයෙන් සැලකිය හැකිය. මේ ගී ජනප්‍රිය වීමේහි ප්‍රධාන හේතුව මේවා කාව්‍ය රසයෙන් අනූන නිසාමය.

Sinhalese Play At
Ladies' College

THE Ladies' College Sinhalese Dramatic Society are to be congratulated on their production of "Kuveni", an adaptation of a play by Dr. A. P. de Zoysa, at the School Hall on Friday night. The main theme was that of Kuveni, woman not Yakkini, who was in love with Vijaya, and the portrayal of her subjects' reactions to her marriage with a foreign prince provided admirable comic relief.

It is not often that a Colombo school attempts to produce a Sinhalese play, perhaps owing to the unfortunate disadvantage of their pupils not generally being able to speak Sinhalese naturally and fluently; so it was a brave attempt, and the girls acquitted themselves very creditably. Kuveni (Manel Nanayakkara), was delightfully shy, tender and earnest, and she was so lovely to look at that one couldn't help feeling slightly disappointed at Vijaya's lack of appreciation. Anandi Kumarasinghe, as Vijaya, acted a difficult role commendably, but she was perhaps just a shade less impressive than she might have been.

Kuveni's match-making uncle was convincingly portrayed by Iranganie Goonesinghe, but to me the most enjoyable scenes of the play were those in which the village men and women gathered to gossip about their Queen's marriage. They were most natural on the stage, and it was a pleasure merely to look at the bevy of pretty village maidens. Ranjini Jayasuriya provoked
many a laugh by her excellent acting as the old man of the village who yet wished to be thought young by girls. The best piece of acting, however, was to my mind that of Indrani Samarasinghe (also a villager), who really entered into the spirit of her role of gay bachelor. Christine Dias made an awe-inspiring priest.

The songs (specially written for the play by Sunil Shanti), had been skilfully introduced so that they fitted in quite naturally, and the dance in the coronation scene was gracefully performed.

CHARITY CONCERT

The Royal College Sinhalese Literary Association is giving an Oriental concert next Friday in aid of the College Social Service League. Among other activities the League conducts a series of evening classes at Toc H. for peons and messenger boys.

Among those taking part are Sunil Shanti, Niranjala Devi, Robert Hansen, Lionel Edirisinghe, pupils from Shanti Kala Niketan and Chitra Sena's school of daneing, also Guneya, the famous Kandyan dancer, from the National Dancing Association

SIGN OF THE TIMES?

ON quite a different plane, but also by the feminine element, is a Sinhalese production, "Kuveni". which the Ladies' College Sinhalese Dramatic Society are staging on February 5 and 6. I understand that this is an adaptation from a play by Dr. A. P. de Zoysa, and the story deals with Kuveni the woman, rather than Kuveni the "Yakkini". There is to be a big cast, and songs have been written specially for this production by Sunil Shanti.

It is still uncommon to find the big Colombo schools producing Sinhalese and Tamil plays, and it is a healthy sign that they are getting interested in them. Miss R. Breckenridge, on her return from the school of art at Adyar, was reported as having said that she was astonished to find Oriental culture and customs given their due place in the Indian schools as at Ladies College, where she had taught, "everything Western is highly rated and anything Eastern underrated."

Perhaps this was the case in our schools some years ago, but times have changed. One instance of this is the fact that whereas when we were in school most of the Colombo schools entered only for the English sections of the Colombo Radio Reading and Recitation Competitions, they now take part in the Sinhalese and Tamil sections as well. An effort such as the one being made by these girls in their production of "Kuveni" surely deserves every encouragement.

ROHANA MELA DRAWS
LARGE CROWDS

In Aid of Galle Mayor's
Fund

GALLE, Monday Rohana Mela, Carnival and Exhibition, in aid of the Galle Mayor's Fund, attracted the highest record crowd for one day, last night, when Sunil Santha and his troupe contributed to the entertainment by giving a benefit recital in aid of the fund.

Sunil Santha was accompanied by the Vidura Ballet dancer,Mr. Sarath Sena, Mr. W. D. Albert Perera, Mr. Percy Wijewardena, and a number of others.

Mr. W. T. Wijekulasooriya, Mayor of Galle, thanked Sunil Santha and his troupe for giving a recital for that worthy cause, the Mayor's Fund, which aimed at collecting sufficient monies to build a Town Hall, an amenity that was greatly missed by all townfolk.

The Mela is continuing to attract large crowds daily.

Fifty Years' Achievements

THE Prime Minister, Mr. D.S. Senanayake, laid the foundation stone of the new hall of the Young Men's Buddhist Association at Borella yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering.

He was welcomed on arrival by Sir Ernest de Silva, President of the Y.M.B.A., and members of the Committee, while a bevy of girls sang the "Jayemangala Gatha."

Sir Ernest de Silva said that the Y.M.B.A. had been in existence for nearly half a century and during that period it had done very valuable work for the benefit of the Buddhists of Ceylon. He regretted, however, to observe that "many of the prominent and highly placed Buddhists of this country did not take very much interest in that Association." It was a pity, indeed, that it should be so.

Sir Ernest referred to the proposed establishment of a branch of that Association in the Fort, and said that he had just been told that it might be possible to obtain a site near the Lotus Road. It was valuable land, and if they succeeded in persuading the Minister of Agriculture and Lands to part with the land, he was sure the Association would receive the necessary support from a great many of those who had been hitherto lukewarm in their interest in the Association's activities.

Sir Ernest next referring to the Premier said that he admired Mr. Senanayake's courage.

TEST OF CIVILIZED LIFE

"We here represent the middle-class of the Buddhists and we do not find many highly placed and intellectual men visiting us here, but we, in our poor way, are trying to do our duty by our weaker brethren," Sir Ernest went on, and referred to the night school conducted by the Association and the other projects it had in view to help the poorer sections of the community. "We must admit," he said, "that the test of civilised life in a country lies in the quality of its poorest people. We are abjectly poor and it is up to men like Mr. Senanayake to do everything that is possible for the uplift of the people."

Mr. Senanayake, in the course of his address, said he confessed that he was guilty of the charge made by Sir Ernest de Silva, in that, having been a Vice-president of the Association and a member for a very long time, he should certainly have "taken a greater interest in its work than he had been able to do." But he begged of them not to think for a moment that because he had not taken an active interest in the work of the Association, it was due to lack of appreciation of the good work done by them, or that it was due to a lack of sense of duty he owed the Buddhist public.

Mr. Senanayake expressed on behalf of the Association their gratitude to Senator Cyril de Zoyza who had undertaken to build that hall.

Mr. V. S. Nanayakkara, General Secretary of the Association, thanked the Prime Minister and also paid a tribute to the founder, the late Sir Baron Jayatilaka.

A recital followed, in the course of which Sunil Shanti, the popular vocalist, gave a song recital, accompanied by his party.

MUSICAL EVENING AT
THE Y.M.B.A.

A program of Oriental music, songs and dances will be presented by the Social Activities Branch of the Colombo Y.M.B.A. on the 29th instant at 6.30 p.m. at the Association Hall, Borella.

Among the artistes taking part are the popular vocalists Sunil Santhi, Somapala and Chitra, Susil Premaratne and Miss Astrid Sekerajasingham. A display of classical Indian dancing will be given by Misses Neila Balendra, Sivam Thangarajah, Indira Menon, Chitrasena's pupils and the Alethea School Troupe under the direction of Miss. Vivienne Seneviratne.

(Bachelor of Music and Diploma in Vocal, and Gold Medallist
of the Bhakhadi University of Lucknow.)

Was at first in the Santiniketan, and then proceeded from there to the Bhakhadi University of Indian Music,Lucknow, for a further period of 5 years' study in music. He was placed first in the first division in this University and was the only Ceylonese to pass out with Diploma both in Vocal and Instrumental.

Hector Edirisinghe has entertained the services 2,387 times in various parts of Ceylon and North India. He was the first Yodeller in the East to record for SEAC and his records were broadcast by the Cairo Radio Station to entertain the services in the Middle East. Very shortly he will go to India for recording four of his own compositions.

A director of a London Theatre was so impressed by his fine performances that he straightaway offered him a two-year contract to appear in variety shows.

UNIVERSITY RECITAL IN
AID OF ARTS SOCIETY

The Song and Dance Recital arranged by the Mela-the University Society of Oriental Arts-takes place on Saturday, August 30 at 6.30 p.m. at King George's Hall. This Society conducts regular classes in the Oriental Fine Arts, and for the attainment of
its cultural aim, the Society is stated to need a considerable financial backing Saturday's program includes items by the well-known singer Sunil Shanti, Somapala and Chitra. Chularatne and Susil Premaratne. Ganga Nath of the Chitrasena Troupe, will perform the "Cycle of Karma" which is a dramatic representation of rebirth. There will also be a dance by Chinta Perera-a pupil of Chitrasena. Damsels from the Pasyala Girls' School will present elegant folk dances while boys and girls from the Rotary Community Centre, Mahawatta will bring before the audience some rhythmical pictures from the culture of Kandy.

The Mela amateurs will contribute two orchestral items.
