THE TIMES OF CEYLON,

India beats Ceylon

In Weight Lifting Competition

INDIA'S victory over Ceylon, in the Third Indo-Ceylon Weight Lifting Contest, held yesterday in the Zahira College Hall, was triumphant, not only in the fact that she beat Ceylon, but also in the overwhelming weights lifted.

Only in one event, the Light weight, could Ceylon approach the high standard attained by the Indians. In this class Dissanayake put up a good show although he was handicapped by injured wrists. Perhaps, being perfectly fit, he would have reversed the decision yesterday.

The honours of the day, however, go to D. P. Mony (India) in the Feather Weight class, who impressed the large audience by his exceptional lifts. In aggregating 580 lbs., he beat with ease T. S. J. Packeer Ally of the Kandy Y.M.C.A., by no less than a hundred and twenty pounds.

This young lifter, is only a few pounds below world standard. A good muscle controller, with the legs of a boxer, he has a great future before him. He well deserved the best lifter's Cup which he received amidst rounds of applause.

Sunil Shanti accompanied by various instruments sang several Sinhalese songs to an appreciative audience.
